Happy Juneteenth!

We wish everyone a happy Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved African Americans were set free in Galveston, Texas, and 156 years later in Washington, D.C., President Joe Biden declared Juneteenth a federal holiday. With as far as we have come in the last century and a half there is still so much work to be done.

Take today to learn about our history and be more invested in our community, as we know we manifest true change only when we work together. At Great MN Schools, we’re committed to that work, and are driven to changing our city and our community to one that works for everyone.

We hope to shape our city to one that prides itself on equity and ensures all students have access to a high-quality school and education. If you would like to get involved on this historic Juneteenth, America’s second independence day, there are many events being held throughout Minneapolis: Juxtaposition is hosting a Juneteenth celebration in North Minneapolis, Stevens Square Community Organization is hosting Juneteenth week and many more celebrations being held throughout our great city. Communities around Minneapolis, let us unite on this day to honor freedom for all.
